Local Mom Boss: Meet Erin Messner

By Alicia Carmody, Publisher Mom, Macaroni Kid December 18, 2019

A Q&A with Local Mom Boss Erin Messner, Owner of Lemon Lane Consignment Boutique in Falls Church.

1. What is your name? What is the name of your business?

Erin Messner, Owner of Lemon Lane Consignment

2. What inspired or encouraged you to start your business in our area?

I discovered consignment when I was pregnant with my first (who turned 7 this summer!) and quickly fell in love. At first I loved finding my favorite brands, in amazing condition, for a fraction of retail. Kids grow so fast, so I loved being able to resell outgrown clothes to help fund the next seasons wardrobe. I grew to really appreciate the sustainability aspect of resale. The fashion industry is the second largest source of pollution in the world. Consigning, and buying consigned clothes makes a huge difference in lowering that impact.

3. What do you love about your work?

The most rewarding part of being a small business owner is getting to know our consignors and customers. Hands down. Our customers are truly the best! There’s nothing I love more than customers who come in just to share milestone, update us on a life event, or just pop in to say hello. And watching all their babies grow is such a joy!

4. What advice do you have for others wanting to start a business?

Leap! Do all the planning you need, but at some point, you have to trust yourself and leap. You can do it!

5. What do you do to take care of yourself and how do you make time to do it?

Taking time for self care is so important. Especially for parents of young kids- we’re just spread so thin! I exercise (I love Barre & Yoga, but a walk with the dog totally does the trick too!) and nurture my village by grabbing coffee or lunch with a friend any chance I get.

6. What can we do to support you in the community?

Shopping local any chance you get goes a long way in supporting the small business community. There are so many great small businesses in Falls Church and Arlington! Engagement with your favorite small business is also really helpful. Like, comment and share their social media posts and tell your friends about your favorite finds, or great experiences.

7. What is your (or your family’s) favorite spot around town?

A perfect morning in Falls Church starts at Pure Barre Falls Church, followed by South Block!

Weekend afternoons on the W&OD trail with the kids or playing at Cherry Hill Park.

I love a family dinner at Clare & Dons, or girls night at Dominion Beer & Wine.

Thank you so much Erin, for sharing your knowledge and time with us!  You can find Lemon Lane at 246 W Broad St in Falls Church or online at lemonlaneconsignment.com.
