The King’s Speech
Whether you've seen the movie or this is your first interaction with the plot line, the story behind this incredible production will move you! The lead actors who portray Prince Albert, affectionately knows as Bertie (Nick Westrate), and his quirky speech therapist Lionel (Michael Bakkensen) have an on stage chemistry that will wow audiences young and old. Their interactions are at times sentimental and moving and as the play progresses you see a rare and authentic friendship emerge on stage.
The supporting roles are a treat as well, with Maggie Lacey playing a phenomenal and poignant Elizabeth (a striking resemblance from our view!) and the royal counterparts such as Kevin Gudahl (Winston Churchill) and Jeff Parker (David, Prince of Wales) kept audiences entertained and delighted with some humorous interactions and quick wit alongside serious and tumultuous decisions with vast repercussions for the throne. Lionel's wife was perfectly played by Michelle Jasso and was a welcome opposition, albeit not always a friendly one, to the uptight personality of Elizabeth.
English royalty is having a moment and this plays does not disappoint, showing more glimpses into royal life and the traditions and rules the royal family must follow and how they affect those around them. The beauty of this play lies in the friendship and ease two seemingly different men, Bertie and Lionel, have for one another and how they overcome both a physical obstacle as well as emotional ones and both come out with something greater for it.
Whether you've heard of the story, seen it on The Crown or watched the movie, also titled "The King's Speech," the play is a worthy genre you don't want to miss!
